Lasting Relief from Migraine Headaches

Migraines are a type of headache disorder that consists of headaches on ones side of the head that can sometimes spread to the other over time. These severe headaches are usually moderate to severe in intensity and can last for longer than four hours if they aren’t treated. While common migraines are those without the foreshadowing auras, those that come with auras are called classic migraines. Commonly accompanied by nausea and difficulty with loud noises, migraines are very common, as approximately 40 million Americans experience them.

For the most part, those with MS that experience migraines have already gotten them periodically and were not caused by their MS. However, those that had never experienced the sensations prior to their diagnosis may now to the various medications they are taking that could possibly trigger them.

Obviously these headaches can be very debilitating and can limit somebody’s ability to enjoy their day-to-day life. Here are a few home remedies that have shown the ability to successfully treat a migraine:

Scented Oil: Inhaling a scented oil is a soothing home remedy that has shown to eliminate headaches. For example, peppermint oil has vaso-constricting and vaso-dilating properties, which help control blood flow in the body. Headaches and migraine pain are often due to poor blood flow, and peppermint oil helps to open and close the vessels that promote flow. Basil and Lavender oils are also effective and help to open up the sinuses to allow proper oxygen intake.

Change in Diet: Certain foods have been shown to affect the frequency and severity of headaches and migraine pain, including dairy, chocolate, peanut butter, citrus fruits and meats containing nitrates (ham, hotdogs and bacon). Keep track of how much of these foods you take in and see how your symptoms improve.

Scalp Massage: Scalp massages can be an effective way to alleviate migraine pain, and they feel great. Researchers in Brazil showed that massaging the greater occipital nerve (the area in the back of the head, at the base of the skull) reduces migraine pain.
